Cosmos Win Thriller in Competitive East River Derby

It was a defensive effort by both New York City FC and the New York Cosmos, in the end it was the team in Green and White that was able to earn a 1-0 victory in the 2016 Edition of the East River Derby.

Helping to secure the lone goal for the Cosmos was Danny Szetela, who headed in the game-winner in the 88th minute to help his team earn the victory.

This is the third consecutive year the Cosmos advanced to the Open Cup’s Round of 16. They have won three out of four matches against NYCFC and the New York Red Bulls in the competition.

For New York City FC, they once again played very well and with great quality, but sadly they were unable to secure a goal and victory.

Diego Martinez had a great opportunity for the boys in blue in the 54th minute, that was unable to find the back of the cage. Also getting great opportunities were Mix Diskerud and Patrick Mullins.

Both keepers for NYCFC and the New York Cosmos made some very impressive saves in the cage. For the host team making a start was Eirik Johansen. For the Cosmos earning the shutout was Jimmy Maurer.

New York City FC returns to MLS play after the international break to host the Philadelphia Union at Yankee Stadium Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

As for the New York Cosmos they will learn who the next Open Cup opponent will be. Thing will be decided via a draw beginning at 12 p.m. ET on Thursday, June 16.
