The New York Cosmos continue to play very well in the US Open Cup Tournament, earning a 2-0 victory over the Jersey Express in the Third Round of the 2016 edition of this famed contest.

Once again playing at Belson Stadium on the Campus of St. John’s University the Cosmos were able to earn a big victory against their first opponent to set-up a New York Derby against Major League Soccer team New York City FC.

Leading the way in the match versus Jersey Express, was Ayoze, putting one into the upper left hand corner of the net that gave the hosts a 1-0 lead going into the half.

The Cosmos were able to add onto that lead, when late addition Yohandry Orozco combined with Hunter Freeman in the 72nd mark.

Earning the clean sheet in the cage for the Cosmos was keeper Brian Holt, who had several acrobatic saves throughout the night.

These two teams have met in prior tournaments, as the Cosmos and Express also met in the Third Round of the 2015 U.S. Open Cup, with New York winning 3-0 at Belson Stadium on May 27.

New York had not only lots of quality play from guys who had not seen time before, but also lots of scoring opportunities, which bodes well for the team as they advanced in both the US Open Cup Tournament, but also in the NASL schedule.

The Cosmos will conclude the Spring Portion of the NASL Schedule this Saturday, as they travel to take on the Fort Lauderdale Strikers at Lockhart Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. New York can clinch the Spring Season Championship with a win.

Now it is on to the Fourth Round of the Tournament, where they will take on New York City FC on Wednesday, June 15 at Fordham University’s Coffey Field. The Cosmos defeated NYCFC at this stage a year ago in thrilling fashion, coming back from two goals down in the second half to triumph in a penalty shootout.
