The St. John’s men’s basketball program will open the 2015 Maui Jim Maui Invitational against Vanderbilt on Nov. 23 as revealed Tuesday with the official bracket for the 32nd annual event. All 12 contests of the Maui Invitational Championship Round at Lahaina Civic Center will be televised nationally by the ESPN family of networks.
Making its first-ever appearance in the prestigious Maui Invitational, the Red Storm will square off with Vanderbilt for the seventh time in program history. It is the first quarterfinal contest of the Championship Round with tip-off scheduled for 2:30 PM ET on ESPN2. St. John’s holds a 5-1 advantage in the series, but has not met the Commodores since 1977.
The Red Storm’s second matchup in Maui will be against Indiana or Wake Forest on Nov. 24. The opposite side of the bracket features Kansas, UCLA, UNLV and tournament host Chaminade, all potential opponents for St. John’s third game on Nov. 25. Prior to departing for Hawaii, St. John’s will host UMBC at Carnesecca Arena on Nov. 16 in a Maui Jim Maui Invitational opening game.
“The Maui Jim Maui Invitational is sure to deliver three days of the best basketball of the early season,” Tournament Chairman Dave Odom said. “This bracket features compelling matchups and exciting storylines starting on day one. It is said that the path to the Final Four starts in Maui. I have no doubt that this statement will be true this year.”
St. John’s, the eighth winningest program in NCAA Division I history with 1,795 victories, is one of four teams participating in the Championship Round that ranks in the top-10 on the all-time wins list (Kansas, UCLA, Indiana). The eight-team field has combined for 215 NCAA Tournament berths all-time, which includes the Red Storm’s 28 appearances in the “Big Dance.”
