New York City FC forward David Villa has been named to the Major League Soccer Team of the Week for Week 19.
Villa had a pair of goals — his third brace in four matches — as New York City FC drew 4-4 with Toronto FC on Sunday at Yankee Stadium. The captain’s first goal of the match was a 19-yard free kick from the corner of the box that found the inside of the near post. It was the second consecutive match Villa scored off a free kick.
That Free kick also landed The Captain a nomination on the MLS Goal of the Week for Week 19.
The Designated Player also scored on a penalty kick in the 65th minute to increase his Club-leading goal tally to 10. Villa is one of three players in MLS to have double-digit goals this season, joining the Columbus Crew’s Kei Kamara (12) and Toronto FC’s Sebastian Giovinco (11).
Villa has been named to MLS Team of the Week on four other occasions in his debut season in the league: Week 2, Week 15, Week 16 and Week 18.
