History was made, a Number One Seed for the Major League Lacrosse Playoffs and a 2015 Regular Season Championship were all accomplished on July 9 by the New York Lizards.
This team was assembled for one thing to reclaim the Major League Lacrosse Championship and took a major step in that direction with their 10th victory a 18-15 decision over the current, reigning and defending MLL Champs the Denver Outlaws.
In a game that saw not only history being made but a lighting delay, nothing was going to stop the Lizards from clinching the Number One overall seed in the upcoming Major League Lacrosse Playoffs.
The offense started off quickly with Greg ‘The Beast’ Gurenlian winning the opening face-off and scoring quickly after that.
New York saw goals from Tommy Palasek (2), Rob Pannell, and JoJo Marasco before Denver got on the board to make the score 5-1 with 3:31 left in the First Quarter.
Mike Stone got the Second Quarter offense rolling with a goal with 12:07 left, before the Outlaws once again scoring to cut the lead. Panell, Ryan Walsh (2), and Paul Rabil all recorded goals before one by Denver made the score 10-5 at the Half.
Just when the Second Half of action had begun a bolt of lightning struck down on Shuart Stadium, causing a 45-minute delay. Steve DeNapoli kicked off the second half with a goal, as well as Pannell contributing two more goals and an assist. Both Marasco and Rabil added to the score with individual goals. The Outlaws tried to catch up by bringing in three goals throughout the third.
Denver showed their fighting spirit in the Fourth Quarter with their seven goals in 15 minutes. Marasco, Palasek, and Pannell continued to impress by each recording a goal to seal the deal for the Lizards.
Earning the Coca-Cola Player of the Game was Rob Pannell who led the team with a seven point game consisting of five goals and two assists. JoJo Marasco and Tommy Palasek recorded a hat trick, while Ryan Walsh and Paul Rabil both had two goals each.
History was made in this game as Greg Gurenlian not only broke the ground ball record in a season, but also holds the record for most face off wins in a single season at 250. Gurenlian face-off percentage is now at 86 percent with his 30-for-35 performance at the X against Denver.
New York will now finish out the 2015 Regular Season on the road visiting the Ohio Machine on July 18, and going to Denver on July 25.
The Lizards next step to winning the Major League Lacrosse Championship is on August 1, when they enter the MLL Playoffs. The team will play at Shuart Stadium but the time and opponent is to be determined, so be sure to stay tuned.
