It wasn’t the way the Brooklyn Cyclones (1-1) were hoping to debut in front of 7,795 at MCU Park, but it was game full of lessons for these young players-as the team dropped a tough 8-3 loss to Staten Island (1-1) on Saturday night.
Starting Pitcher Gaby Almonte worked Five Innings, giving up eight hits, eight runs (six earned) and two walks. Almonte, who stayed in the game due to the fact that the Cyclones bullpen had been used in the team’s 2015 New York-Penn League Opener against Staten Island.
Now this rivalry series is tied at One, with the Cyclones expected to have a few players making their first start for the team when it comes time for Game 3 on Sunday.
Staten Island had a great hitting night, as the Baby Bombers finished the game with nine hits. Leading the way was centerfielder Jhalan Jackson who hit a two-run homer in the Second Inning, as the visitors took an early lead.
Jackson finished the night with one walk, two hits and four RBIs. Also having a good night at the dish was Drew Bridges who also had two hits and an RBI.
Pitcher Luis Cedeno (1-0) went 6.1 innings, striking out three hitters. The Yankees bullpen was only called upon once as Jhon Morban went 2.2 scoreless innings.
The Cyclones showed a ton of spunk and spirit throughout the night, as they cut into the Staten Island lead several times. It was a tough third inning that eventually cost the Baby Bums the victory.
Leading the offense for Brooklyn was who had two hits. Vinny Siena, Michael Katz and Jeff Diehl all had hits in the game.
For Diehl he came in as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the ninth and gave the Cyclones offense a spark with a double, sadly though he was unable to score as the final score was 8-3.
This series between these two New York-Penn League rivals will conclude on Sunday (June 21) in Staten Island at 4p.m. It will be a battle of the righties as Michael Gibbons of the Cyclones takes on Matt Borens of the Yankees.
