When it comes time for rivalry games and matches one can only hope for a night like June 17. That was when the New York Cosmos and New York City FC played each other in the Forth Round of the US Open Cup Tournament.

The match had it all in a rollercoaster of a night that featured a comeback by the Cosmos, Two Extra Time Frames and a Penalty Kick Session that had everyone on their feet.

With a crowd of 11,446 filling the stands of Shuart Stadium all either wearing the Cosmos Green or the NYCFC Sky Blue on this night it was the Cosmos that were the victor with a 4-3 decision.

It was New York City FC that was able to find the first goal of the night as in the 24 minute Kwadwo Poku found the back of the cage off a brilliant feed from RJ Allen.

Poku continued his great play by tallying second goal of the night at the in the 57th minute, collecting a ball from Pablo Alvarez and slamming it home to the far corner of the cage. For Kwadwo, the former NASL-star  had three goals in the last two matches, while also making his second start in the last three matches.

The Cosmos did not go down without a fight as Leo Fernandes, who was inserted into the match as a sub found the back of the cage thanks to a two great passing from Lucky Mkosana and Hunter Freeman.

With Cosmos Country starting to buzz Mkosana struck at the 90th minute, launching a cross by Freeman to the corner to tie things up at 2.

After Two 15 Minutes of Extra Time the match went into penalty kicks that saw three amazing saves by Cosmos Keeper Jimmy Maurer and the eventual game-winner by Hunter Gorskie to allow the team to advance to the Fifth Round of the US Open Cup Tournament.

In the Round of 16, the Cosmos could potentially face another Major League Soccer side. The date and location of that match will be announced at Thursday’s U.S. Open Cup draw.

For now the Cosmos will prepare for the start of the 2015 NASL Fall Season, which starts on July 5 against the Indy Eleven.

As for New York City FC, who left it all out on the pitch tonight and had a great performance, they will now look to continue their climb in the Major League Soccer Eastern Conference standings. They will be on the road for a match against Toronto FC on June 20, before returning back to Yankee Stadium to take on the New York Red Bulls on June 28.
