New York City FC Suffers Deflating 3-1 loss to Seattle Sounders FC

New York City FC (1-5-3) suffered a deflating 3-1 loss to the Seattle Sounders FC (5-2-1) in Major League Soccer action on Sunday, May 3.

The club played an aggressive style for most of the night, but in the end the team was not rewarded for their effort as the Sounders used their speed and great passing to earn the victory.

Getting good chances in the First Half were Khiry Shelton, Patrick Mullins and Pablo Alvarez, who made his first start for the club.

New York City FC had 11 Attempts on Goal to Seattle Sounders FC 4-six shots at target and 50.6% possession to 43.2. In the Second Half NYCFC had Nine Attempts on goal while having 59.9% possession of the ball.

Seattle found the back of the cage at the 23 minute mark of the First Half as Obafemi Martins beat NYCFC Keeper Josh Saunders on the ride hand side of the cage.

NYCFC found the back of the cage in the 54 minute of the Second Half as Mehdi Ballouchy found a pretty pass from Mullins to tie the game.

Shortly after scoring Ballouchy was substituted for David Villa, who returned from a hamstring injury suffered during the Philadelphia Union match.

The Seattle Sounders FC went ahead at the 58 minute as Clint Dempsey connected from a pretty pass by Marco Pappa and Martins.

Martins used his speed at the 67 minute mark to give the Seattle Sounders FC the 3-1 lead. Obafemi had a beautiful ball from Dempsey, that in the end gave Seattle the victory.

In the Second Half making his debut on the defensive side of the ball for New York City FC was RJ Allen who was very impressive in his first few minutes with the club.

Allen, who is a native of Old Bridge, N.J. showed some great spunk and ability to move the ball in his 20 minutes in the match.

The schedule for New York City FC does not get any easier as they take on the New York Red Bulls on May 10. Kickoff from Red Bulls Arena is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.


The Announced attendance for the match was 25, 384 also returning from injury was Mix Diskerud who had been out since the Portland Timbers match, and also having served with the US Men’s National Team.
