Nova using a combination of great defense along with some deadly shooting from downtown. The Wildcats finished the night scoring 50 percent from the field, while also holding the Musketeers well below their season averages for points and field goal percentage.
Leading the way in scoring for Villanova was Josh Hart, who is now not only the League’s Sixth Man of the Year Award, but also now the BIG EAST MVP Trophy to become the first reserve player to win the award.
Hart finished the night with 15 points. Going 7- for- 9 from the field and grabbed seven boards. He averaged 17.7 points in three tournament games on 21-of-29 shooting (72.4 percent), including 9 for 14 (64.2 percent) from 3-point range.
There were also two other players in double figure scoring as Dylan Ennis scored 16 points and Darrun Hilliard had 12.
Hilliard scored eight straight Wildcats points, and his second consecutive 3-pointer started a 10-0 run that gave Villanova a 27-14 advantage with 5:19 left in the first half.
For their efforts in the game Ennis and Hilliard were named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament team.
Xavier who had played with such spunk throughout the tournament, was unable to find any more magic to upset Villanova, who are now on a 15-game winning streak.
It is also looking as if Nova has an opportunity to head into the NCAA Tournament with a Number 1 seed, but that will be determined on Selection Sunday.
