Two players have been added to the New York City FC roster as the club will kick off their their historic inaugural Major League Soccer season against Orlando City SC on Sunday at Orlando Citrus Bowl Stadium.
On Friday the team signed veteran midfielder Pablo Alvarez Nunez on a free transfer.
A 34-year-old native of Spain, Alvarez is a veteran midfielder, known for playing on the wing, but can also play in a central midfield role. New York City FC will be his first Club outside of Spain. Most recently he played for Langreo. He also spent five years playing for Sporting Gijon, where he scored 25 goals in 160 appearances.
“I couldn’t be happier about officially signing with New York City FC ahead of our historic inaugural season,” said Alvarez. “I have trained hard with the team over the preseason, and will continue to work hard to give this team everything I can. I am particularly excited to play in front of our fans at the iconic Yankee Stadium.”
Head Coach Jason Kreis had this to say on the newest addition, “Pablo has integrated well with the squad over the course of the preseason. His experience will add an important veteran presence to the team both on and off the field. We have worked hard to build a team with a balance of youth and experience and that should serve us well as we head into the season.”
NYCFC also added Manchester City defender Shay Facey on loan from Manchester City until June 30, 2015.
A versatile defender who can play at center back or full back, Facey’s strong performances for Manchester City’s Elite Development Squad led to a nomination for the 2013-14 Young Player of the Year award at the Club. He made his senior debut for the Club on the pre-season tour of South Africa against SuperSport United in 2013.
“It’s really exciting for me to be joining New York City FC as we begin our historic inaugural season. The squad and coaches have been fantastic throughout training camps, and I’m happy to be part of something so special,” Facey said. “It been a fantastic experience. The initial idea was just to train with the team for pre-season, but I’ve really enjoyed working with the group and am now very much looking forward to the start of the season. What’s happening at this club is exciting for a player and it’s something we talk about as a group. ”
“The standard has been competitive in training as well as in the matches and I’m looking forward to fighting for my place in the squad and learning from Jason Kreis and the other coaches. It will be a proud moment for me when I make my MLS debut.”
Jason Kreis added: “It’s great for the Club to have added Shay to our ranks. He’s fit in well during pre-season on and off the pitch and his defensive talents will add depth and quality to the back line. Shay is also a versatile defender that can play in numerous positions across the defense. I’m confident he will bring a lot to this roster.”
New York City FC will have their historic home opener at Yankee Stadium on March 15 when they take on the New England Revolution, with start time scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
