Sir’Dominic Pointer earned the BIG EAST’s Player of the Week award on Monday after being named to the conference’s honor roll the for last five weeks. The St. John’s senior was also tabbed CBSSports.com National Player of the Week for his performances in a pair of victories over Xavier and Georgetown. Pointer averaged 21.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 4.0 blocks, 2.5 assists, 2.5 steals and shot 57.1 percent over the two games last week.
Pointer helped lead St. John’s (20-9, 9-7) to its sixth victory in the last seven games with an 81-70 rout of BIG EAST archrival Georgetown at Madison Square Garden. He matched a career-high with 24 points against the Hoyas marking his 14th straight game scoring double-figures. The Detroit native grabbed seven rebounds, swatted two shots and handed out two assists lifting the Red Storm to the 20-win mark for the second-straight season.
Last Monday, Pointer filled up the stat sheet with 19 points, nine rebounds, six blocks four steals and three assists in the Red Storm’s 58-57 triumph over Xavier at The Garden. He hit five of his first six shot attempts and became the 50th player in St. John’s history to record 1,000 career points with his tip-in at the 6:34 mark of the first half.
Pointer has received BIG EAST weekly honors in seven of the last 10 weeks. In the last five games, he has averaged a team-high 21.0 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.2 steals. He ranks in the top-10 of the BIG EAST in several statistical categories, including scoring (9th, 14.0 ppg), rebounding (4th, 7.6 rpg), field goal percentage (6th, 54.0 pct), steals (3rd, 2.0 spg) and blocks (T-2nd, 2.6 bpg).
St. John’s begins at two-game road stretch on Wednesday when the Red Storm carries its three-game win streak to Marquette. Tip-off is slated for 9 p.m. eastern on FOX Sports 1 and 570 AM (WMCA). The Red Storm wraps up the regular-season on Saturday against No. 6/6 Villanova at the Wells Fargo Center at 2 p.m. on FOX and 98.7 WEPN-FM.
