Sir’Dominic Pointer was named Player of the Week by the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) on Tuesday. It is the second time in the last four weeks the 6-foot-6 senior received the accolade. Pointer averaged 19.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.5 blocks and 2.5 steals lifting St. John’s (17-8, 6-6) to wins over DePaul and Xavier.

Pointer had 15 points, 11 rebounds and blocked five shots in the Red Storm’s 86-78 victory over DePaul on Wednesday. It was his sixth double-double of the season which is the second highest total among BIG EAST players.

The Red Storm went for its third straight win Saturday handing Xavier only its second loss at the Cintas Center this season behind Pointer’s career-high 24-point performance. He shot 9-of-10 from the field and converted all six free-throw attempts as St. John’s improved to 17-8, the program’s best record through 25 games since 1999-2000.

Over the two-game stretch, Pointer shot 72.7 percent (16-of-22) and 87.5 percent (7-of-8) at the line. On Monday, he was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the fourth straight week.

Pointer joins teammate D’Angelo Harrison with two MBWA Player of the Week Awards this season. Harrison received the accolade on Dec. 9 and Dec. 16. The honor is chosen from Division I, II, III players from the 74 metropolitan area schools.

St. John’s completes a two-game road stretch Tuesday at 7 p.m. versus Georgetown at the Verizon Center. The Red Storm has won four of its last five games heading into the 102nd meeting with the Hoyas. A national telecast will air on FOX Sports 1 with Gus Johnson and Bill Raftery. The St. John’s radio broadcast with John Minko and Vin Parise is on 970 AM (WNYM).
