The Hofstra Men’s Basketball team will host Colonial Athletic Association-newcomer Elon on Saturday night at 7 p.m. from the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.
Pride Productions will have live video and audio of the contest. The broadcast can also be heard on WGCH (1490 AM), with Julian Coltre, Andrew Fertitta and Mark Weiner on the call, beginning with the pregame show at 6:30 p.m.
Hofstra (15-9, 6-5) is coming off a 79-69 road win over Delaware on Wednesday that gave the Pride the season sweep of the Blue Hens for the first time since the 2010-11 campaign.
The Pride got 22 points (five three-pointers) and six rebounds from junior forward Ameen Tanksley and 14 points (four three-pointers) from sophomore guard Brian Bernardi. As a team, Hofstra drained 13 three-pointers and took a school-record 37 shots from beyond the arc.
With the 13 three-pointers against Delaware, Hofstra has now sank 223 this season and that total is good for fourth-most in a single season in program history. This year’s total only trails 2006-07 (256), 2013-14 (229) and 1999-2000 (225). Individually speaking, Bernardi ranks ninth in a single season with 73, while Tanksley is just outside the top 10 with 63 (10th place is 72).
Tanksley continues to lead the Pride in scoring with 17.7 points per game, while shooting 48% overall from the field as well as from three-point range. Bernardi is shooting 44% from three-point range, while ranking third on the team with 12.4 points per outing.
Junior guard Juan’ya Green ranks second on the squad with 17.5 points and leads the team with 6.3 assists per game.
This will mark the first-ever game in Hempstead between Hofstra and Elon as conference rivals, but the schools have met twice before – including one game in New York. The Pride and the Phoenix met in the 2009-10 NIT Season Tip-Off in Hempstead and Hofstra captured a 70-46 victory. Earlier this season, Hofstra defeated Elon, 79-61, down in North Carolina.
Elon heads into tonight’s game against Drexel sporting an 11-12 overall mark and a 3-7 CAA record. The Phoenix have a pair of players averaging in double figures as Elijah Bryant leads the way with 13.8 points and Tanner Samson is second with 12.2 points per outing. Samson is a strong outside shooter as he leads Elon with 72 three-pointers. Ryan Winters pulls down 4.8 rebounds per game to lead the team, while Bryant is tops on the roster with 59 assists.
The game against Elon will be the first of a quick two-game homestand for Hofstra as the Pride will host CAA preseason favorite Northeastern on Thursday, February 12 at 7 p.m. in a game that will be televised nationally by the NBC Sports Network. The first 2,000 fans at the game will receive a free WHITE OUT t-shirt and all fans are encouraged to wear white to the game.
