Sir’Dominic Pointer was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday marking the second-straight week he received the conference accolade. The 6-foot-6 senior led St. John’s with 16.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 2.0 steals in two contests versus Creighton and Providence.
Pointer recorded his third-straight double-double on Wednesday posting 13 points and 10 rebounds to go with six assists, three blocks and three steals at Creighton. It was the sixth time this season that Pointer finished with double-digits in the rebounding column.
The Detroit native poured in a team-high 20 points shooting 6-of-10 from the field and 7-of-8 at the free-throw line on Saturday to lead St. John’s to a 75-66 victory over Providence. Pointer led St. John’s in assists for the fourth-straight game, handing out five, and grabbed seven rebounds. Defensively, he played a key role in limiting the BIG EAST leading scorer LaDontae Henton (20.4 ppg) to a 2-for-14 shooting performance.
Pointer hit 10-of-12 (83.3 percent) free-throw attempts in two games last week and converted 42.3 percent (11-of-26) of his field goal attempts. He also averaged 2.0 blocks and had a 1.8 assist-to-turnover ratio.
Sir’Dominic ranks among the BIG EAST leaders in several statistical categories this season. He is in the top-5 averaging 7.4 rebounds, 2.1 blocks and 2.1 steals. Pointer has also cracked the top-10 in field goal shooting percentage (51.9), assists (3.4) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.9).
Averaging a career best 12.2 points, Pointer has recorded double-figures in the last six games beginning with an 18-point performance in a 13-point win at Providence on Jan. 14. During this recent six-game stretch, he has averaged 16.2 points, 8.0 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 2.5 blocks and 1.8 steals.
Providence’s Kris Dunn was named BIG EAST Player of the Week after posting the 14th triple-double in BIG EAST history on Thursday. Xavier’s Trevon Bluiett was named Rookie of the Week. Pointer was joined on the honor roll by Andrew Chrabascz (Butler), D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera (Georgetown), Sterling Gibbs (Seton Hall) and Myles Davis (Xavier).
St. John’s (14-7, 3-5) returns to action on Tuesday versus No. 25 Butler (16-6, 6-3) at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. FOX Sports 1 has the national broadcast at 7 p.m.
