Last Second Heartbreak for Fordham MBB in 64-63 loss to URI

It is the one that got away for the Fordham Men’s Basketball team (5-13, 0-10 Atlantic Conference Play) as the Rams had the lead but lost it in the final seconds to the University of Rhode Island (14-5, 6-2 A10) in College Basketball action at Rose Hill Gym.

In a game that featured 10 scoring changes and eight ties, Fordham had the lead with Nine Seconds remaining thanks to some huge free throws by Mandell Thomas. As the seconds ticked away on the scoreboard, it had seemed as if maybe the home team had earned their fist Conference victory at home, when a dagger came at the hands of Gilvydas Biruta who recorded a lay-up with barely any time left on the clock.

The final play for the University of Rhode Island was so close that the officials had to go to replay to see if  Biruta was able to make it-in the end the bad luck continued for Fordham and this game will forever be known as the one that got away.

Both teams had the chance to cash in on plays early on in the game. For Fordham having caused 16 turnovers may have been the difference in the game. Also the fact that the hosts shot 41.2 % from the field versus the 41.8 % for the visiting team could have made a difference in the game.

Eric Paschall led all scoring with his 19 points, while Jon Severe followed with 17 points from the bench going a perfect 3-for-3 from downtown. Rounding up the scoring was Ryan Rhoomes who finished the game with a double-double of 10 points and 16 rebounds.

The road for the Fordham University Men’s Basketball team does not get any easier as they now go on the road to take on the always tough University of Dayton on February 1, before returning home to Rose Hill Gym on February 4 to take on the University of Massachusetts, tip-off time for the game versus UMass is set for 7:00 p.m.
