Madison Square Garden has been hosts to many historic moments throughout the years, you can add January 25, 2015 to the list and No. 5 Duke Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski recorded his 1,000th win as his team defeated St. John’s 77-68 in College Basketball action at Madison Square Garden.
Krzyzewski became the first ever Division 1 Men’s Basketball Coach to reach the milestone, in what was a thriller of a game at the Garden.
At the Half St. John’s had the lead and the momentum as the Red Storm went to the lockers with a 43-39 lead.
Sir’Dominic Pointer had 21 points, 10 rebounds, four
assists, three steals and three blocks for the Red Storm (13-6), who were looking for a huge win to put on their NCAA tournament resume down the road. They were in position to get it, but got worn down by Duke late and let this one slip away.
Also having impressive performances were Rysheed Jordan scored 18 points, and Phil Greene IV who added 13.
For Duke Guard Tyus Jones scored 22 points and the Blue Devils, was perfect from the charity stripe (10-f0r-10) while also adding six assists and one steal. Potential #1 NBA Draft pick Jahlil Okafor recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 boards playing in front of New York Knicks GM Phil Jackson and potential future teammate Carmelo Anthony.
As for Krzyzewski the Duke Coach is no stranger to Madison Square Garden or milestones as he recorded win No. 903 against Michigan State in November 2011, breaking the Division I record previously held by his college coach and mentor, Bob Knight.
The Coach who has always done things at the highest level possible balanced the milestone and also focusing on getting his team ready to resume ACC play against Notre Dame.
For St John’s they will resume BIG EAST Conference play with a trip to Creighton before returning back to Madison Square Garden to take on Providence on January 21, with the tip-off time for that scheduled for Noon.
