Hofstra University Junior Guard Juan’ya Green has been named to the mid-season watch list for the 2015 Lou Henson Award.
The Lou Henson Award is presented annually to the Division I “Mid-Major” Player of the Year. The award is named in honor of Henson who retired after a spectacular coaching career that lasted 41 years. When he left the game in 2005 he was sixth all-time in career Division I wins with 779. He is the winningest coach at both Illinois and New Mexico State. He is one of only 12 coaches in the history of the game to take two schools to the Final Four.
The 2015 recipient will be announced at the CollegeInsider.com Awards Banquet on April 3 in Indianapolis, site of the 2015 men’s NCAA Basketball Championship.
Green is off to a strong start in his Hofstra career as the talented Philadelphia, PA native ranks second on the Pride in scoring with 17.7 points per contest, while leading Hofstra with 6.2 assists and 1.5 steals per contest. He also pulls down five rebounds per game to rank third on the squad in that category.
Green’s tremendous influence on the game is felt in all areas as he is the only player in the nation averaging at least 17 points, six assists and five rebounds per outing. In addition, earlier this season he had a triple-double with 15 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists against LIU Brooklyn at the Barclays Center. It marked the first-ever triple-double by any player, NBA or NCAA, at the home of the Brooklyn Nets (NBA). He is one of only eight players nationally to tally a triple-double this season.
He leads Hofstra with five double-doubles this season and nationally he ranks 13th in assists per game, 48th in assist/turnover ratio (2.57), 59th in points per game and 91st in free throw percentage (83.2). In addition, his name is all over the CAA rankings as well as he ranks fourth in scoring, 13th in field goal percentage (37%), seventh in free throw percentage, 17th in rebounding, first in assists, third in steals, first in assist/turnover ratio, 10th in defensive rebounds (4.3) and third in minutes played (36.1).
Green has already scored 336 points for the Pride this season, giving him a career total of 1,467 including his two seasons at Niagara.
Green poured in a season-high 26 points at Charleston on January 8 and on three occasions he has amassed a career-high 11 assists (last time at Northeastern on January 14). The 10 rebounds against LIU Brooklyn also tied a career-high.
Green and Hofstra (13-6, 4-2 CAA) return to action on Saturday, January 24 when the Pride host the Dukes of James Madison University at the Mack Sports Complex. Game time is 4 p.m.
