Two of the top teams in the BIG EAST Conference played at Carnesecca Arena on Friday Morning and in the end it was the DePaul Blue Demons (13-5, 5-1) that was able to get the 84-75 victory over St. John’s (13-4, 4-2) in overtime.
In a thriller of a game that saw 15 lead changes and the score tied eight times, the Red Storm had plenty of chances but in the end were burned by the three-pointer and free throws.
The Blue Demons finished the game 40% shooting from downtown and 52.6 % from the charity stripe. As for the Red Storm, who are normally a better free throw shooting team shot from 37.5% tonight.
St. John’s had two players finishing in double-digit scoring as Aliyyah Handford led all with 25 points, going 10-of-20 from the field. Danaejah Grant finished the game with 23 points going 10-of-18 from the field.
DePaul had five players finishing in double-figure scoring and were led by Brittany Hrynko who finished the night with 25 points. Prior to the start of the game the Blue Demonds were ranked third in the country in three-pointers per-game, and proved to be sharpshooting once again in the game on Friday.
It was Field Trip Day at Carnesecca Arena as the 5,602 in attendance was the biggest crowd for a women’s game. The energy was tremendous for those in attendance who were having a good time watching the ladies play.
St. John’s will next be in action on Sunday when they take on Marquette in a 2:00 p.m. tip-off. Fans interested in seeing the game can do so via the broadcast on ESPN 3
