St. John’s senior D’Angelo Harrison was named to the Midseason Top 25 list for the 2015 John R. Wooden Award® Presented by Wendy’s® announced Wednesday by the Los Angeles Athletic Club. A Preseason BIG EAST First Team selection and a six-time conference weekly award winner in eight weeks this season, Harrison was chosen by a poll of national college basketball experts as a strong candidate for the prestigious individual honor based on his performance in the first half of the 2014-15 season.
The Wooden Award watch list will be trimmed to the top 20 players in early February, and then the top 15 student-athletes will make the final ballot prior to the NCAA Tournament. Every year, players make the ballot who are not on the preseason or midseason lists. Voting will take into consideration the opening rounds of the NCAA Tournament. The Wooden Award All American Team will be announced the week of the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.
Harrison has been a force for St. John’s in many facets of the game which has garnered him national recognition. The 6-foot-4 guard from Missouri City, Texas, ranks top-10 in the nation with 20.6 points per game, and he is the BIG EAST leader with a 27.0 scoring average in league contests. Harrison also ranks 10th in the conference in rebounding (6.1/game), seventh in defensive rebounds (4.7/game), seventh in free-throw shooting percentage (82.9 pct), fifth in 3-point field goals made (2.0/game) and second in minutes played (35.1/game).
A two-time BIG EAST Player of the Week in 2014-15, Harrison has led the Red Storm in scoring nine times in 15 games this season. He has reached double-digits on 14 occasions, including nine 20+ point performances, and has exploded for a season-high 31 points twice. Harrison has been one of the top shooting guards in the BIG EAST going over the 50.0 percent field goal shooting mark in seven contests this season. He currently ranks among the league leaders with a 50.9 shooting percentage in conference games.
Harrison was named the conference’s top player for the week on Dec. 8 after averaging 20.0 points and 6.0 rebounds in a pair of wins at Syracuse and against Niagara. His marquee performance came at the Carrier Dome where he poured in a game-high 24 points to help snap the Orange’s 55-game home win streak against non-conference opponents. Then on Dec. 15, Harrison was again tabbed the BIG EAST’s top performer for the fourth time in his career. He averaged 24.0 points in a pair of 20-point victories over Fairleigh Dickinson and Fordham.
In his four years at St. John’s, Harrison has scored 1,910 career points, only 17 shy of tying Felipe Lopez (1994-98, 1,927) for third place on the program’s career scoring list. He is also on track to become only the third member of St. John’s 2,000-point club joining Chris Mullin (1981-85, 2,440) and Malik Sealy (1988-92, 2,402). Harrison already owns the program’s career 3-point field goal record (228).
St. John’s has had two John R. Wooden Award® winners in its prestigious basketball history. Mullin received The Wooden Award in 1985 and Walter Berry earned the honor in 1986.
