December 21, will be known as the day of missed opportunities for the St. John’s Women’s Basketball team (10-1) who saw the undefeated streak snapped in a Double Overtime loss to Indiana State (10-1) in the St. John’s Chartwells Holiday Classic at Carnesecca Arena.
In a game that saw 11 lead changes and 13 ties, the Red Storm fought hard throughout the game, but found that turnovers (25), fouls (23) and other missed opportunities lead to the first loss of the season.
Leading the way for St. John’s was Junior Aliyyah Handford, who was honored prior to the game for reaching the 1,000 Point Plateau. Handford was one of three players in double-figure scoring as the Guard finished with 27 points, Nine Rebounds and Four Assists.
Danaejah Grant recorded 18 points, along with a huge three-pointer with 1:11 in the Second Period to send the Red Storm and the Sycamores into Overtime. Grant also had a sweet jumper in the paint with 46 seconds left in the First Overtime to force the game.
Indiana State though took advantage of turnovers and the missed shots in the Second Overtime victory to snap the St. John’s Winning streak. The Sycamores had two players finish in double-figure scoring as Jasmine Grier led all with her 21 points.
Rounding out the scoring for St. John’s was Sophomore Jade Walker (Maplewood, N.J.) who had a double-double of 10 points and 10 boards, for her second career double-double.
St. John’s returns to action on Tuesday, Dec. 30, opening up BIG EAST Conference play with a road game at Providence.
