Fordham University Football Student-Athletes senior defensive lineman Brett Biestek and senior tight end Dan Light were named Capital One Academic All-America®, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom it was announced on Thursday. Biestek was named to the First Team for the second consecutive year while Light was named to the Second Team.
This marks the fourth time in the past five years that a Fordham student-athlete has earned Capital One Academic All-America® honors. It also is the first time in school history that two football student-athletes were recognized as Academic All-America® in the same season and the second time in four years that the Rams had two different student-athletes honored in the same academic year. Fordham has now had six different football student-athletes named Academic All-America®.
Biestek, the 2014 Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year and First Team All-League selection, has 54 total tackles, 38 solo, including 18.0 for loss and 11.5 sacks, both team highs. He is second in the Patriot League and 22nd in the NCAA FCS in tackles for loss/game (1.50) and third in the league and 12th in the NCAA FCS in sacks/game (0.96). He also has two forced fumble, two blocked kicks and three quarterback hurries.
In 48 career games, Biestek has 140 total tackles, 96 solo, including 38 for a loss and 19.5 sacks.
Light, a Preseason All-America and 2014 First Team All-Patriot League selection, started 12 games at tight end. He has 43 receptions for 385 yards with six touchdowns on the year, ranking fourth on the squad in receptions and receiving yards and third in touchdowns.
Over his career, Light has 177 receptions, fifth on the Fordham career reception list and tops for a tight end, for 1,594 yards, tenth on the career receiving yards list.
The #9/12 Rams return to action on Saturday, December 6, as they travel to Durham, N.H., to face the University of New Hampshire in the second round of the NCAA FCS Championship in Cowell Stadium at 11:00 p.m.
