St. John’s Hangs Tough but falls to No 10/8 Gonzaga in NIT Season Tip-Off Championship

The St. John’s University Men’s Basketball team (4-2) showed a ton of heart in the Second Half of play but were unable to complete a comeback, falling to No 10/8 Gonzaga by a final of 73-66 in the NIT Season Tip-Off Tournament played at Madison Square Garden.

Playing with a smaller sized team in the final minutes of play was also when the Red Storm started to look aggressive and really started to attack Gonzaga.

The play of both Phil Greene IV (Chicago, Ill.) and Sir’Dominic Pointer (Detroit, Mich.) especially impressed as the duo came up with some big plays down the stretch.

Greene led all scoring by matching a career-high with four 3-pointers and scored a game-high 20 points, while Pointer contributed nine points and nine rebounds.

Rysheed Jordan (Philadelphia, Pa.) added 19 points and D’Angelo Harrison (Missouri City, Texas) also had impressive games for St. John’s with the duo finishing with 19 points 15 points respectively.

In the end though the combination of Gonzaga’s size and great athletic ability that earned them the victory.

The Bulldogs had five players in double-figure scoring led by Domantas Sabonis had 14 points and eight rebounds to lead five double-figure scorers for Gonzaga (6-0), which entered the game averaging 93.4 points per game this season.
