On a must-win night for the New York Cosmos (11-6-7 Combined Standings) got exactly what they needed in the moment they needed it most, an extra time goal to defeat the Ottawa Fury FC (7-12-5) in North American Soccer League action on Saturday Night.
It wasn’t pretty as Ottawa started the match on a furious pace controlling the ball and getting most of the good opportunities to start the first half of play. It was the Cosmos that were able to strike first on a beautiful play between Danny Szetela and Diomar Diaz. It was in the 43 minute that Szetela gave a beauty of the cross from the right side of the field to Diaz who headed home the first goal of the game.
The Cosmos were able to hold off the Ottawa Fury FC offense for the first half, as keeper Jimmy Maurer was kept very busy, but kept the ball out of the cage.
Ottawa Fury FC struck back in the second half as Tom Heinemann netted the game-tying goal at the 58-Minute that was assisted by Philippe Davies. New York had many heart stopping moments in the second half of play most came off the boot of Mads Stokkelien, but at the end it took extra time for these two teams to determine a winner.
It was in the 93-minute that sub Hagop Chirishian was able to find the back of the cage, as the Midfielder connected on the game-winner with his thigh to give the team three huge points as things are in the most important stretch of the season.
Tonight was certainly an e-motional one for the team in not only earning the victory, but also winning one for Coach Giovanni Savarese who was ejected after questioning a corner in the Second Half of the game. The Coaching staff was able to pull together and make the right moves in the later part of the night to earn this huge victory.
The Cosmos will go on the road to take on Minnesota United FC on October 18, before the team returns home for the final match of the NASL Regular season on October 25 against the Tampa Bay Rowdies.
