The Cosmos outshot FC Edmonton 19-6 and controlled the ball 54 percent of the time during the match, but they failed to convert on any of their chances.

New York has now gone nearly three complete games without scoring a goal. They last scored seven minutes into their match against the Fort Lauderdale Strikers back on July 26. Since then, they were held off the scoreboard against Carolina and tonight against Edmonton.

It wasn’t for lack of opportunity, as the Cosmos dominated play in the second half, outshooting FC Edmonton 15-3. They had 24 free kicks to FC Edmonton’s 15 and five corner kicks to just three for the visitors.

The latter part of the second half saw New York use an extra player after FC Edmonton’s Tomi Amoeobi was given a red card for a dangerous tackle on New York’s Danny Szetela.

Marcos Senna had some of the best scoring chances for the Cosmos. He came closest in the 51st minute on a free kick that sailed just over the crossbar. Senna had another opportunity that went wide in stoppage time as the midfielder had a ball that sailed just wide of the left hand corner of the net.

Ayoze also had a great scoring chance on a free kick in the 82nd minute. His kick seemed ticketed for the top left corner of the net, but FC Edmonton netminder John Smits managed to leap and knock the ball over the top of the goal.

New York has a 1-2-2 record in the NASL’s Fall Season. Despite the slow start to the second half, the defending Soccer Bowl Champions are still in the thick of the playoff hunt, which will see four teams qualify for the postseason.

The Cosmos return to action on Saturday, August 9 when they travel to Atlanta to take on the Silverbacks before taking on the Tampa Bay Rowdies on August 15. It will be their third match this week, with the guys having won the last road game against the Ottawa Fury FC by a final of 1-0 on July 20.

New York was able to defeat Atlanta during the 2014 NASL Spring Season by a score of 4-0 on April 13, during that match the team was Carlos Mendes who scored two goals, Ayoze, and Mads Stokkelien.

In the team’s last meeting with the Rowdies during the 2014 NASL Spring Season the Cosmos were able to earn the 3-0 victory on goals by Mads Stokkelien, Ayoze and Paulo Mendes.

Attendance was 4,524.

It was the first start for Senna since May 24.

Fans were treated to a fireworks show after the conclusion of the match.
