Hold on tight Cyclones fans, it is going to be a thrill a minute a ride as Brooklyn (27-24) has now evened things up in the Wild Card Standings with a 4-3 victory over the Connecticut Tigers (27-24) in New York-Penn League action on Monday night.
Much like the wooden roller coster ride down the block, the boys of MCU Park have been a thrill a minute to watch during the 2014 season, with different players stepping up during different times during the course of the season.
The most recent additions of Michael Conforto and John Mora have added an extra spring to the steps of the team, while familiar faces like Casey Meisner and Michael Bernal have both been able to continue their growth while contributing some big games for the Cyclones.
In the finale against Connecticut, the home team struck in the bottom of the first inning with both Conforto and Bernal both recording RBI singles. There was also a huge pinch-hit single by Jeff Diehl in the bottom of the seventh inning. Diehl who is working his way back to the team from an oblique injury showed maturity during his at bat, getting the perfect pitch to hit, while also driving in the run.
Meisner battled throughout but earned the opportunity to pitch six innings, giving up only one run while striking out six batters in his second victory of the season. The Cyclones Pen also came through for the team today as both Carlos Valdez and Shane Bay were able to keep the Tigers at bay and eventually secure the victory.
There was also a tremendous defensive play in the top of the sixth inning as Michael Bernal had a cannon of a throw to get Tigers Joseph Pankake out at home. For Cyclones fans there is also some bad news as Michael Katz injured his knee during the July 27 game versus the Lowell Spinners.
Brooklyn will now be on the road to take on teams that they have not faced yet this season, but Manager Tom Gamboa is optimistic on how the starters are lining-up and how the team is gelling so far.
