NOTES: Long Island Lizards v Boston Cannons 5/30/14

Here are some notes to prepare fans of the New York Lizards (2-2) as they are getting ready to play host to the Boston Cannons (2-2) in Major League Lacrosse action on Friday, May 30, 2014 at Shuart Stadium.

Draftee Luke Duprey and Duke Blue Devils win NCAA Championship:

After suffering a torn ACL in April, draftee Luke Duprey played in both the semi-final and National Championship games last weekend with the Blue Devils. Duprey is scheduled to have surgery to repair the torn ligaments next month.

2014 Lizards roster boasts 3 of past 5 Tewaaraton Award Winners:

With the addition of Ned Crotty in the off-season, the Lizards now have the 2009, 2010, and 2013 Tewaaraton Award Winners on their roster. Max Seibald won the award in 2009, Ned Crotty in 2010, and most recently Rob Pannell in 2013. In addition, rookie Joe Fletcher is currently one of the five 2014 Tewaaraton Award nominees. The 2014 Tewaaraton Award winner will be announced May 28th.

Gurenlian nine ground balls away from Lizard’s record:

Face-off specialist Greg “Beast” Gurenlian is currently second on the Lizard’s all-time ground ball list with 347. With just nine more ground balls, Gurenlian will eclipse Peter Vlahakis’s 356 to become the Lizard’s all-time ground ball leader.

Battle of the Best on Friday :

Gurenlian currently ranks second in the League in FO win percentage at 61.1%. Boston’s face-off specialist, Chris Eck, is the only player in the League with a better win percentage than Gurenlian, at 64.8%.

Lizards officially lead MLL in number of players on Team USA:

With Joe Fletcher officially named to the Lizard’s roster, New York leads Major League Lacrosse in the number of players named to the Team USA 30-man roster with eight players. Team USA will take on Team Canada in the first game of the FIL World Championships on Thursday, July 10 at 7 PM MST. Lizards’ players representing Team USA include: Drew Adams (G), Ned Crotty (A/M), Joe Fletcher (D), Kyle Hartzell (LSM), Brian Karalunas (D), JoJo Marasco (M), Rob Pannell (A), Max Seibald (M).

League stat leaders…

  • –  Points: Rob Pannell is tied with Kevin Buchanan (BOS) for 4th in the League at 16 points
  • –  Goals: Rob Pannell ranks 5th in the League with 9 goals; Max Seibald is tied with Brendan Mundorf (CHE) and Jeremy Sieverts (DEN) for 6th in the League with 8 goals
  • –  Assists: Rob Pannell is tied with Steele Stanwick (OH) for 4th in the League with 7 assists
  • –  Shot Percentage: Al Maione ranks 3rd in the League, shooting 60% on ten shots

The Lizards and the Cannons game is set to start at 7:30 pm, with the first 1,000 fans entering into the gates receiving a Rob Panell Bobblehead.
