The New York Mets announced on Wednesday that the club has selected righthanded pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka’s contract from Las Vegas (AAA) of the Pacific Coast and outrighted lefthanded pitcher John Lannan.
Matsuzaka will wear #16 and will be available for today’s game at Arizona. The 6-0, 205-pounder was 3-3 with a 4.42 ERA (19 earned runs/38.2 innings) in seven starts for the Mets last year.
He was 0-0 with a 2.25 ERA (three earned runs/12.0 innings) and 12 strikeouts in two starts for the 51s. Matsuzaka’s last start came on April 12 at Fresno when he pitched 7.0 shutout innings with eight strikeouts.
Matsuzaka, 33, ranks third all-time among Japanese-born pitchers in wins (53) and strikeouts (642) and is fourth in starts (123).
Lannan, 32, was 1-0 with a 15.25 ERA (seven earned runs/4.0 innings) in five games this season with the Mets.
