Cosmos make a splash in 2014 Spring Home Opener

The New York Cosmos (1-0) opened up the 2014 North American Soccer League on a strong note as the Captain Carlos Mendes netted two goals to help lead the team to a 4-0 victory over the Atlanta Silverbacks (0-1) in soccer action on Saturday.

Keeper Jimmy Maurer came up big early and often for the Cosmos making a huge save for the team at the 16 minute mark, before Mendes tallied his first professional goal at the 23 minute.

New York doubled up the score at the 31 minute mark as Ayoze blasts in a rebound after a shot by Mads Stokkelien. Mendes tallied his second of the game having a beautiful finish from a corer by Ayoze around 37 minutes for the 3-0 lead.

Stokkelien capped of the game with his first goal for the Cosmos off a cross from Sebastian Guenzatti as the guys were able to finish the game with a 4-0 victory.

Maurer had a huge game for New York finishing the night with 12 saves including two in the first half of play that could have easily changed the momentum of the game.

The Cosmos will have no time to rest as they have to prepare for a trip to take on FC Edmonton on Saturday. They will next be back home on April 26 when they take on the San Antonio Scorpions at 7:00 p.m.
