New York Liberty sign Three to Training Camp Roster

The New York Liberty added forward Nicky Anosike, and guards Janeesa “Chucky” Jeffery and Anna Cruz to its training camp roster, the team announced today. The Liberty open training camp on Sunday, April 27, and to celebrate their return to New York City and Madison Square Garden will participate in the second annual 9/11 Memorial 5K Run/Walk that day.

A five-year veteran of the WNBA, Anosike was selected in the second round of the 2008 draft by the Minnesota Lynx and went on to be named to the All-WNBA Rookie Team that season. In 2009, Anosike was voted an All-Star following a season in which she became just the second player in league history to lead their team in all five major statistical categories (points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks). She has career averages of 8.9 points and 6.6 rebounds in 139 career games. A native of Brooklyn, New York, Anosike won back-to-back National Championships at Tennessee.

Jeffery appeared in two games for the Liberty last season while on a seven-day contract in August. Originally a second round pick (24th overall) of the Minnesota Lynx in the 2013 WNBA Draft, Jeffery attended the University of Colorado where she led the Buffalos in scoring (13.7 ppg), assists (4.0 apg), rebounds (8.2 rpg) and steals (2.2) as a senior. She was also an AP All-American Honorable Mention and two-time All-Pac-12 selection.

Cruz, a 5-9 guard, spent the 2013-14 season playing in Russia for Nadezhda Orenburg. A native of Spain, Cruz competed in the Spanish League for nine seasons, including the previous four with Rivas Ecopolis. She also played for Olesa, Burgoes and Barcelona. In her first season with Nadezhda Orenburg, Cruz averaged 7.2 points, 2.9 rebounds and 3.4 assists in the Russian League and 8.8 points, 3.7 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game in Euroleague action. Nadezhda Orenburg was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Euroleague Championships.

The Liberty will tip-off the 2014 preseason with back-to-back games against the Connecticut Sun, beginning with a road contest at Mohegan Sun Arena on Sunday, May 4 at 1 p.m., followed by a home matchup on Thursday, May 8 at 11 a.m. at Madison Square Garden. Exhibition play concludes on Sunday, May 11 at 3 p.m. against the Atlanta Dream at Philips Arena.

New York opens regular season action against Connecticut on Saturday, May 16 at 7 p.m. at Mohegan Sun Arena. The Liberty will then make their long awaited return to Madison Square Garden to host the Chicago Sky on Opening Night on Saturday, May 17 at 7 p.m. Prior to the game, the team will host a fan fest outside of The Garden starting at 3 p.m., highlighted by music, prizes, guest appearances, a talent competition for local groups and basketball contests on the Liberty sport court.
