Islanders v. Blue Jackets 3/23/14

Here are some notes as at the New York Islanders (26-35-9) play host to the Columbus Blue Jackets (36-28-6) in NHL action at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

LAST GAME

3/18/14: NIY 0 vs. MIN 6

The New York Islanders offense was kept off the board Tuesday, as the team fell 6-0 to the Minnesota Wild at Nassau Coliseum. The Islanders outshot the Wild 36-22, but could not capitalize. The Wild countered with six unanswered goals, including a three-point night (two goals, one assist) from former-Islander Matt Moulson.

TONIGHT’S MATCHUP

The Islanders complete their four-game home stand today against the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Blue Jackets have won the first two meetings between the teams this season, spoiling the Isles’ home opener as they overcame a 2-0 deficit for a 3-2 shootout win and then defeating the Isles 5-2 in Columbus in November. The clubs will meet once more this season on April 6.

TEAM NOTES

Hot Hands: Kyle Okposo has eight points (2g/6a) in his last five games. Anders Lee (2g/3a) and Frans Nielsen (3g/2a) each have five points in the last four games.

College Signing: Defenseman Kevin Czuczman (pronounced “Churchman”) made his NHL debut Tuesday vs. Minnesota. The Islanders’ agreed to a two-year, entry-level contract with the college free agent on Mar. 11. Czuczman, 23, posted career highs in goals (10) and points (21) in 36 games as a junior at Lake Superior State University. The Port Elgin, ON, native’s 10 goals led all Western Collegiate Hockey Association defensemen. He also led all Lakers defensemen in points, ranking fourth overall on the team, and led the club in penalty minutes (73).

Nielsen: Frans Nielsen has set career highs in goals (22) and points (49). The Danish centre has five points (3G, 2A) in his last four games.

Homestand: The Islanders wrap up a four-game homestand this afternoon.

The Islanders and Blue Jackets game is set to air on the MSG Plus network, with face-off set for 1:00 p.m.
