Islanders v Jets 3/4/14

Here are some notes as the New York Islanders (23-32-8) are on the road getting ready to take on the Winnipeg Jets (30-26-6) in NHL action on Tuesday night.

LAST GAME:

3/2/14: NYI 3 vs. FLA 5
Despite a three-point game from Thomas Vanek, the Islanders could not hold onto a third-period lead, falling 5-3 to the Florida Panthers Sunday afternoon at Nassau Coliseum. Vanek scored twice in the opening frame and assisted on Ryan Strome’s second-period goal, but the Islanders 3-1 lead evaporated as the Panthers scored four goals in the final 20 minutes
TONIGHT’S MATCHUP
The Islanders begin a four-game trip through Western Canada tonight in Winnipeg. The Jets defeated the Isles 3-2 at the Coliseum on Thanksgiving Eve, but the Isles are 3-0-1 in Manitoba since the Jets returned to the NHL.
TEAM NOTES:
NHL Scoring Race: Kyle Okposo is tied for eighth in the NHL scoring race with 61 points (25g/36a). Prior to suffering a season-ending injury during the Olympics, John Tavares was third in the NHL scoring race with 66 points (24g/42a) in 59 games.
Another 20: Thomas Vanek’s two goals Sunday were the 270th and 271st of his career, catching and then passing Bobby Orr on the all-time list. Vanek has scored at least 20 goals in each of his nine NHL seasons; Alex Ovechkin is the only other player who has scored at least 20 goals in each of the last nine seasons. The Rangers’ Rick Nash needs one goal (he has 19 this season) to join
Ovechkin and Vanek.
MILESTONE WATCH:
Kyle Okposo – 3 goals shy of 100
The Islanders and Jets game is set to air on the  MSG Plus Network, with face-off scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
