he New York Cosmos announced on Wednesday that the club has acquired defender James Ockford on loan from the Seattle Sounders of Major League Soccer. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Ockford, 21, was drafted by Seattle in the second round (21st overall) in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft. The Yardley, PA native finished his college career with a strong senior season at the University of Louisville, playing center back for the Cardinals.
“James is a promising young defender who will provide competition and depth on our back line,” Cosmos head coach Giovanni Savarese said.
At Louisville, Ockford helped the team to the inaugural American Athletic Conference title and was named AAC Defender of the Year. Before playing his senior year in Kentucky, Ockford spent his first three years of college at Mount St. Mary’s University (NY), spending time with The Mount as a midfielder and forward before switching to the back after he transferred to the Cardinals.
