Manhattan Women get taste of the MAAC Champs in Loss to Marist

With the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament around the corner the Manhattan Women’s Basketball team (8-19, 7-11 Conference) got a taste of the current, reigning and defending champions Marist College (22-6, 16-2) in the 81-54 loss.

It was a rough night for the ladies, but one that will not be forgotten as the team had another taste of the champions closer to Playoff time.

Manhattan was able to get on the board first when Senior Guard  Monica Roeder (Marlton, NJ) hit a three-point shot to open the frame. Marist would take over shortly afterward, in spite of the Jaspers’ many attempts to fight back in the game in the end it was the Red Foxes who would come out the victors.

There were some flashes of pretty passing to go along with some aggressive play calling by Manhattan, and if they can find a way to do that in the Conference Playoffs they will be a team to watch for in that week in Springfield, MA.

Leading the way in scoring for the Jaspers was Junior Guard  Nicole Isaacs (Fair Haven, NJ) who finished with 12 points. Roeder, Ashley Stec (Cazenovia, NY) and Allison Skrec (Roselle, NJ)  tallied nine points each, while Skrec dished out eight assists.

Stec had an a solid game in the forward spot able to make some pretty sweet moves and hitting some nice jumpers during the course of the game. Skrec had several nice drives to the basket, while also having some creative moments on the floor.

It was when the ladies were able to move the ball around that they were successful, they also were unable to convert on their fast break opportunities, which could have really helped them gain momentum during the course of the game.

The last two games for the Manhattan ladies will be vital ones as they are trying to gain a good seed in the MAAC Playoffs. Currently the Jaspers sit tied with Canisius and Niagara for sixth place in the MAAC with two games remaining in the regular season.  The first of those contests is a matchup at Saint Peter’s (3-24, 2-16 MAAC) at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.  Manhattan defeated the Peacocks 58-31 when the teams met in Riverdale on Feb. 6.
