The New York Cosmos announced on Thursday that last season’s Team MVP and former Spain international Marcos Senna has signed a contract extension with the team through July 2015.

“I’ve had an incredible experience in New York so far,” Senna said. “Right now, my body feels great and I want to keep playing for as long as possible. This has been a fantastic move for my family and me and we’re looking forward to another great year.”

Last season, the 37-year-old Senna helped bring the Cosmos the NASL championship during the club’s first professional season in almost 30 years. He led the team in goals (6) and started the first 13 matches of the season. He also started the Soccer Bowl championship game, scoring the match’s lone goal en route to victory. Senna was also named to the 2013 NASL Best XI team.

“Marcos was a tremendous presence for us last year,” head coach Giovanni Savarese said. “His leadership helped the team come together and physically his skills are still at a very high level. We’re delighted to have Marcos with us through the 2015 Spring Season and following that, both sides will sit down and discuss the feasibility of a further extension.”

Senna began his career in his Brazil, but prior to coming to New York, he spent 11 seasons at Villarreal CF where he was recognized as one of the top midfielders in La Liga, Spain’s top league. Senna has also served as captain of both Villarreal and the Spanish national team. On the international stage, Senna has 28 caps for the Spanish national team. He was an integral part of the Spanish team that won Euro 2008 and was selected to the UEFA Team of the Tournament.

At Villarreal, Senna made over 300 appearances, scoring 29 goals in all competitions for the Yellow Submarines and helped lead the club to promotion back to La Liga in 2013. During his time at Villarreal, the club reached the UEFA Champions League semifinal and also finished second in La Liga.
