The St. John’s Men’s Basketball team (12-9, 2-6 BIG EAST) have been historically known to get into a bit of a hot stretch under Fourth Year Head Coach Steve Lavin in the second half of play.
Lavin who said from the beginning he felt that February would be the month his team would start to get hot, has seen gradual improvement from his group ever since halftime of the Georgetown game.
Winners of three of the last four games, it will be interesting to see if the trend stays true for the Red Storm, who is starting to show flashes of greatness; which includes a nail-biter against #20 Creighton on the road.
Down by 18 with 12:02 remaining St. John’s played an impressive 28-10 run, before a red-hot Doug McDermott was able to get a game-winning three-point shot with 2.8 seconds that helped lifted the Bluejays to a 63-60 victory on Tuesday.
Junior guard D’Angelo Harrison (Missouri City, Texas) scored 15, while Sophomore forward JaKarr Sampson (Akron, Ohio) tallied 10 points and six boards. Freshman guard Rysheed Jordan (Phildelphia, Pa.) and Sophomore center Chris Obekpa (Makurdi, Nigeria) both finished with 11 points each.
It will be a tough test for St. John’s against Marquette on Saturday, as the Golden Eagles holds a 15-6 all-time series edge over the Red Storm, this includes a 6-1 mark in BIG EAST Play. The good news for Red Storm fans is the fact that the guys currently hold a 3-2 edge against Marquette playing at Madison Square Garden.
