Big Night for Hofstra Men’s Basketball in victory over College of Charleston

It was a big night for the Hofstra University Men’s Basketball team (5-11, 1-1 CAA), playing in front of 1,628 fans at the Mack Sports Complex nights like tonight maybe one that will go down as influential in the team’s upcoming season.

Hofstra had their five starters finish with double figure scoring, rallying from 10 points down in the second half to earn a 75-71 victory over the College of Charleston (9-8, 1-1 CAA) in NCAA action on Saturday evening.

In what was an intense back-and-forth basketball game the Pride were able to keep their head in the game, and kept shooting key buckets when needed to help them earn a huge victory on their home court. The victory tonight helped the guys snap a three game losing streak, while also building confidence in what is still a young basketball season.

Leading the way on the offensive side of things for Hofstra was Graduate Forward Zeke Upshaw (Chicago, Illinois), who took his game to another level recording 22 points and hitting some of the biggest buckets in the night for the Pride.

Another impressive performance was that of Senior Forward Stephen Nwaukoni (Queens, New York) who fired up the team in the final few minutes of play by drawing fowls, hitting several key free-throws and grabbing vital rebounds to help the team earn the victory.

Nwaukoni finished the game with a double-double scoring 13 points and a new career-high 15 rebounds. Sophomore Guard/Forward Jordan Allen (Bay Shore, New York) and Freshman Guard Jamall Robinson (Cheltenham, Maryland)  added 12 points each. Graduate Guard Dion Nesmith (Union, New Jersey) rounded out the scoring with 10 points.

The five players scoring in double-figures marked the first time this occurred for the Pride since a 93-64 win over UNCW on February 25, 2012.

Hofstra will look to keep this momentum going, but will have to do so on the road as they will take on UNC Wilmington (7 pm) on Wednesday and Southern Methodist University (7PM)  in Colonial Athletic Association play on Sunday. The Pride will return to The Mack on Wednesday, January 22 as they will host William and Mary. Tip-off time for the game against William and Mary is set for 7:00 p.m.
