With the 2014 Major League Lacrosse College Draft in the books, the New York Lizards walked out with key pieces they will need for the upcoming season.
Placed with both the number third and fourth picks in the first round, most projected New York to pick defenseman as that was a huge need from the 2013 season. The picks from the experts varied, but in the end the Lizards went with back-to-back defenseman in the College Draft.
With the third overall pick New York selected Joe Fletcher a defensemen out of Loyola. Fletcher (6,2 -218 pounds) was named to the 2014 US Men’s National Team Training Roster; he is the only college player on the training roster. At Loyola, Fletcher became the first player since 2001 to be named a USILA first-team All-American, when he received the award his junior year.
During his junior season, he was also named the ECAC Defensive Player of the Year, picking up 64 ground balls and causing 17 turnovers. Starting all 19 games during his sophomore season, Fletcher was named to the All-ECAC second team and received USILA All-American honorable mention. Prior to joining the Greyhounds, the Syracuse, NY native helped lead West Genesee High School to a 2008 New York State Championship, as well as 2008, 2009, and 2010 Section III Championship.
It was interesting to see what New York was going to do with their fourth pick, many felt like an attack player was going to be picked at this point. Instead the Lizards went straight for another defenseman getting Luke Duprey who is from Duke University.
Duprey (6’5, 210) has thus far played every game as a longstick midfielder. In three seasons, Luke has caused 66 turn overs, causing a career high five turnovers against Notre Dame in February of 2013. Last season, he ranked third in the ACC and 24th nationally in caused turnovers, averaging 1.76 per game. While attending Phillips Academy, he lettered in lacrosse all three seasons, and earned All-American recognition his senior year of high school, earning a spot on the New England All-Star team and Under Armour All-American honors. In addition to lacrosse, Duprey also lettered in football and hockey for three years, and was ranked the 133rd among all hockey players in his age group in the country in 2010.
Names went off the board one-by-one but there was still plenty of impact players left for New York to pick for their 34 and 58 picks. With the 38th pick the Lizards selected Brandon Mangan who is an attack player from Yale University.
Mangan (6’2, 185) a 2013 Tewaaraton Award candidate, USILA All-America honorable mention, 2nd team All-Ivy and 1st team All-New England, Mangan led the Bulldogs in points with 39 goals and 64 points, a record for a junior. His sophomore year, Mangan ranked third on the team in points with 26 goals and 37 assists. Prior to joining the Bulldogs, Mangan was a four-year letter winner at Wantagh High School, where he was also named a 2010 USILA All-American.
With their 58th pick of the night New York selected Alex Zomerfeld (5’9, 180) a midfield player from Bryant University. During his junior season, Zomerfeld ranked third on the team in goals and assists, and forth in points. He started every game of his sophomore and junior seasons, and appeared in every game of his freshman season. In 2013 Zomerfeld was an All-NEC first-team selection and was also named to the Northeast Conference All-Tournament team. Before attending Yale, Zomerfeld was a three-year letter winner at Comseqogue High School, where he was also a two-year starter and 2010 high school All-American.
