Both teams had their strengths, as Hofstra showed off their speed, fight and athletic ability; meanwhile Albany used their size, quick passing and tenacity. In a game that featured nine lead changes and seven ties-it was a very mature Hofstra team that earned a 60-56 victory in Wednesday basketball action.

Mature for a Hofstra team that featured three Freshmen starting in the game, all three contributed some big time minutes though in helping to lead the team to snapping a three-game losing streak at home.

Leading the way for the phenomenal Freshman who had more than half of Hofstra’s total points was Kelly Loftus (Alexandria, VA) who finished the game with a career-high 14 points, including six huge buckets in the final 1:27 of play. Classmate Krystal Luciano (San Juan, Puerto Rico) 13 points and team highs of six assists and four steals, while Elo Edeferioka (Warri, Nigeria) had four points and five rebounds.

The glue that kept the composure of the team in tact was the leadership not only from the Coaches and the team, but from the veterans that were on the floor. Senior Anma Onyeuku (Fayetteville, GA) was a huge part of  making sure her teammates stayed in the game, while contributing with some huge buckets on her own. Onyeuku finished the game leading the scoring overall with her 15 points.

Sophomore Shereesha Richards led Albany with 23 points and a career-high 16 rebounds including seven offensive caroms. Sophomore guard Erin Coughlin added 12 points while 6’9 junior center Megan Craig chipped in with 11 points and five rebounds. The Great Danes shot 39 percent (18-for-46) from the field.

Hofstra remained undefeated in the all-time series (4-0) by defeating an Albany squad that won last season’s America East tile and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

Now it is time for Hofstra to take what they learned from their non-conference schedule and see what they can do in their conference play (Colonial Athletic Association). The ladies will start conference play on the road against the University of Delaware on Sunday, January 5; before returning to the Mack Sports Complex on Thursday, January 9 to take on  Towson University for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off time.
