The Manhattan College Women’s Basketball team (1-3) returned home to Draddy Gymnasium to take on LaSalle University (1-2) in the home opener on Sunday afternoon.

The Jaspers opened up the first half of play on a great note, holding onto an eight point lead before costly turnovers and a 17-2 run by the Explorers allowed them to finish up the game with a 72-62 victory.

Leading the way for Manhattan was senior Monica Roeder (Marlton, NJ) who finished the game with 18 points. Junior Ashley Stec (Cazenovia, NY) followed with 14 points.

Prior to the game Roeder was honored by the team as she became the 20th member of the Jaspers’ 1,000-point club. The senior reached the milestone against Loyola in the first round of the MAAC Tournament on March, 7, 2013. Roeder was the first to reach the plateau since Lindsey Loutsenhizer in 2010-11. Monica currently ranks 18 on the Manhattan all-time list with 1,067 points, five behind 17-th place Leigh Ann Walker.

Roeder did everything in her power to try to will the Jaspers to a victory, including hitting an early three-point shot in the start of the second half of play. LaSalle had back-to-back buckets to pull within 33-32.  Shayna Ericksen (Long Valley, NJ) hit a layup started a rally for Manhattan with 13:36 remaining.

It was at this point that two turnovers allowed for LaSalle to start to regain the momentum of the game, and eventually got the victory.

The Manhattan College Women’s Basketball team will next be in action on Tuesday, November 26 when they host Delaware State in Non-Conference action at 7:00 p.m. at Draddy Gymnasium.
