Here are some New York Jets Quotes for 10/21/13:
On how the team can start a winning streak:
“Yeah, that’s a good point. I don’t know, but if anybody’s got any answers, I’ll be willing to listen. This will be our fourth shot at it this year. The fact that we’re playing Cincinnati doesn’t help matters. That’s for sure. They’re playing about as well as anybody right now. We know it’s going to be a huge challenge playing in Cincinnati and things. Again, our mindset’s going to be ‘It’s all about this opponent.’ We’re going to focus like crazy, attention to detail on the practice field, in the classroom and then head to Cincinnati and put our best out there and that’s exactly what we’re going to do. You want to win on the road. You want to do all that. You’ve just got to bring a good team with you. That’s exactly what we’re going to do. Again, we know it starts with us. We have to protect the football. We’ve got to play good, sound defense and obviously eliminate penalties, especially on the road as well. It will be an emphasis as well.”
How nice it was for the defense to get a big-play turnover:
“Yeah, well, I was happy to see it. I wasn’t sure we could catch a ball on defense, so that was good. We forced two more fumbles, still never got them. We’re like snake-bitten that way it seems like. Again, sometimes turnovers happen in bunches and hopefully that’ll be the case.”
Quarterback Geno Smith:
On yesterday’s win:
“Yesterday was a great day for us. We were able to celebrate a little bit but today I got into the office about eight this morning. I saw 10 to 20 guys in there, everyone was still preparing for another tough week. We had a good time but we’re able to move on from this victory fast and start preparing for another week.”
The importance of building a winning streak:
“It’s extremely important. I think now is the time for us to start developing that consistency that we’ve been talking about and just continuing to stay the course. The more we continue to practice, and get after it on the practice field, the better we’ll be. I think we all should challenge ourselves to start putting together more wins and so I think that starts this week.”
On his ability to move on from a mistake:
“I mean for one, it wasn’t the end of the game and it’s not the end the world. Those things happen. I think the best (test) of the type of player you are is the way you move on from those mistakes and the way you respond. I’m always the type of guy that, I don’t want to make any mistakes but if I ever do I try to come back, respond and be better. That’s just the mentality I take every time. ”
His ability to run being a weapon:
“Well, it’s always been a weapon and a part of my game. We tend to take what the defense gives us. That’s the way we run our offense here, whether I’m in the pocket or I need to run the ball, I’m going to do that. The only thing that matters is moving the chains and getting first downs and putting your best foot forward.”
On why the team hasn’t been able to put together a winning streak:
“I don’t know what you can attribute it too. Our week of preparation leading up to all the losses that we’ve had has been great. We felt confident about them. We went in with the mindset that we were going to win. I think it’s just a testament to the type of league we have. We went up against a tough Steelers team, and (even) with the record they had, they’re never one of those teams you can just book a win in for. You have to go out there and you have (to) compete, and that’s for every single game. I just think you have to continue to focus, especially this week. I want to challenge the guys to focus a bit more and a bit extra because we do have to put together some back-to-back wins.”
Outside Linebacker Willie Colon:
What has prevented the team from putting together a winning streak:
“I think it’s just a lack of detail. I think coming off wins, we’re excited, we’re happy, obviously. I think we just have to have a little more focus in practice. (We need to) have a better understanding it’s just a win, good teams stack wins. Our preparation is huge going into another week.”
On what teams should expect to see from them in regards to the running game:
“I don’t know. I’m just happy, like I said yesterday, that the OC (Coach Marty Mornhinweg) gave us the keys to the car and we were able to drive. I think we’re a physical front and I think we have the ability to play games like that. I think we understand the sense of urgency at that time. Chris (Ivory) did a great job, he did a great job with just hitting the holes and hitting (them) hard. I thought we were establishing Tommy (Bohanon) too. He was physical out there, he finished runs and played hard. I think it was a collective effort.”
If he was surprised at the amount of running plays:
“No, I think it’s a strength of our offense right now, because we do have that ability. Like I said earlier, if you get the chance, you get us an early lead, you get the chance to kind of impose a little bit more on defenses, the sky’s the limit. We have great backs, I think we have a solid line and Geno (Smith) is coming along and is growing better each and every week. Our offense is coming together slowly, (which) is great news for us. Like I said yesterday, it’s a great win. It’s important for us to stack another one. Cincinnati is a great team. I’ve played against them enough. I’ve seen them when they weren’t a good team to where they are at now and it’s night and day. They’re a very solid football team, we have to come with our A game. Cincinnati beat New England. It’s important for us to really put this game in the rearview and really get going on a solid week of preparation.”
Linebacker Demario Davis:
On the defense being successful against Tom Brady and on third down:
“The key was, first of all, being able to stop the run. We wanted to be able to stop the run. We wanted to be able to get pressure on him (and) make him get the ball out of his hands quick. We knew we were going to have our hands full trying to stop (Rob) Gronkowski. I think Antonio Allen did a great job of stopping him and making that big play that changed the game. We knew we just needed to get off the field on third down. I think (they) were one-for-something or two-for-something on third down (one-for-12). That ended up being very big for us. The fact that we were able to get off the field on third down, just really helped us. I think the coaches did a great job of game planning and then all the players came together and did our part in execution and it made us successful yesterday.”
Where the team is at almost halfway through the season:
“I feel like we’re doing some things well, but there are a lot of things we could do better. We just need to try and get better each and every week. It was good to get that extra motivation, to see that when we do go out and execute well that we will be successful. But, that’ll kind of give us motivation going into (this) week’s practice. But we have so many things that we can do better on defense. I feel like our linebackers (can) run and tackle better. We could still cover a little bit better. I think as phenomenal as our defensive line has been, I think they can even do things better. So, we just want to keep getting better. We’re still a long ways from our (full potential) but, I’m definitely happy where we are right now.”
