It was announced on Tuesday that SNY will present the SNY Play Ball Grant, which is presented by Citi to the Lower Eastside Girls Club (LESGC). The $5,000 grant is a part of the network’s charitable initiative to support youth baseball and softball in underserved communities in the Tri-State Area.
The funding from the SNY Ball Ball grant will allow the LESGC to create two softball teams, which will be known as the ‘Avenue D Sluggers,’ for 30 girls ages 6-12. Participation for the league will be free for all players.
Thursday June 7th, SNY will hold a special grant dedication ceremony at East River Park for the new league, which will be hosted by SNY reporter Michelle Yu.
It will be a special day for the ‘Avenue D Sluggers’ as the creation of this new program coincides with the 40th anniversary of the landmark Title IX legislation. Under Title IX, no person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.
Acclaimed actress and LES Girls Club Board member Rosario Dawson states, “The Avenue D Sluggers will help Lower Eastside Girls Club members level the playing field in all areas of life.”
Winners from the SNY Play Ball program will be a part of a special segment during the network’s Emmy-Award Winning children’s show Kids Clubhouse, while also getting to attend Citi Field for a Mets game.
