Liberty drop pre-season finale to Sky, 89-57

The New York Liberty fell to the Chicago Sky by a final score of 89-57 in the pre-season finale at the Prudential Center. On School Day at The Rock, the energy of the students was not enough to lift the ladies to the victory.

Chicago was scoring early and often, as five players finished in double-digit scoring. Leading the way was Brooklyn-native Epiphanny Prince, who finished the game with 15 points, nine rebounds and two steals.

Two Liberty-stars finished in double-digit scoring, as Plenette Pierson paced the scoring with 14 points, following was guard Cappie Pondexter who had 13. Probably the biggest key to the loss was missed shots, as New York finished the game at 35.4 percent from the field.

Another key was the turnovers and the fouls, as the ladies finished with 29 giveaways and 20 fouls. New York didn’t have a ton of positive time with the basketball today, and that will be one of the things to watch for as the ladies progress in the upcoming season.

It was announced prior to the pre-season finale that the Liberty will get to play their Home Opener against the Chicago Sun at Madison Square Garden, as the game was moved due to scheduling conflict with the Eastern Conference Finals.

The ladies won’t get many chances to play at the Garden, which is going its historic renovation. There will be a ton of activities for fans to participate in prior to the Home Opener, as the team is planning on having a Fan Fest beginning at 2:00 p.m. in front of the historic venue.

Fan Fest will have a sport court for fans to shoot hoops, and appearances by the Liberty mascot Maddie and team alumni. Every fan in attendance at the game will receive a foam Liberty torch courtesy of Foxwoods and 2012 roster cards.
