Countdown to opening day is on, as the Orange and Blue faithful are looking forward to the pride and passion that is baseball in New York City. The New York Mets are wrapping-up their action in Spring Training, while getting ready to take on National League East-rival the Atlanta Braves on Thursday.
It has been announced that ace-lefty Johan Santana is ready to take the hill for Opening Day, as he is scheduled to take on Braves starter Tommy Hanson, who finished 2012 with a 2.77 ERA.
Rumors surrounding the franchise are that young starter Jon Niese will be receiving a long-term extension, though no deal has been made official yet. Niese has impressed thus far this spring, looking sharp in a 3-2 loss to the Nationals on Wednesday.
Niese was mixing up his pitches, striking out six batter over six innings against a very pesky Washington team, who maybe one to watch for in the upcoming season.
Also impressing with his power during Spring Training is Lucas Duda, who has hit not only for power but has been able to spray hits throughout the field for New York.
The Mets will wrap-up Spring Training with a preview of the Subway Series with a home-and-home series against the Yankees starting on Tuesday. This will be the first time the Big Apple rivlas will meetin in Florida since 1996.
