Yankees closing in on playoff spot with 5-0 victory over Rays

The New York Yankees (93-60) are closing in on another playoff berth, thanks to their 5-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays (85-68) yesterday. Rookie-sensation Ivan Nova (W, 16-4) tossed shutout ball into the eighth inning, and the Bombers offense was led by Curtis Granderson-who drove in four runs.

New York is one win away of a postseason spot thanks to this victory, though the Rays are still in the hunt for a Wild Card spot…. as Tampa Bay are two games behind the struggling Red Sox.

The Bombers can secure its 16th postseason trip in 17 years with one victory in the day-night doubleheader held at Yankee Stadium today. New York can also wrap up the division title, with a sweep combine with a loss from their arch-rivals.

In the Day portion of the doubleheader at the Cathedral, the Yankees will send out starter Phil Hughes (5-5, 6.00 ERA) to take on ‘Big Game’ James Shields (15-11, 2.78 ERA). The first pitch is slated for 1:05 p.m.
