The New York Liberty (17-13) rallied from a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat the Chicago Sky (14-16) 71-67 on Tuesday.
Cappie Pondexter led the offense with 19 points, along with Plenette Pierson’s 17 to lead the Liberty to victory. New York had lost two straight and five of their previous nine,
The team had plenty to celebrate, as head coach John Whisenant was honored before the game for recording his 100th career regular season victory against Connecticut. The team also honored Liberty-great Kym Hampton, as the former star was inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor during halftime.
Hampton, now works with the team as their fan development leader, was the first-round draft pick of the team in 1997, and became the fifth player inducted into the Ring.
New York continued their celebration by using a 22-2 run over a 6 ½ minute stretch in the fourth quarter, as the team now has three-of-five victories in the season series against the Sky.
The ladies will now have a home-and-home series with the leagues’ best team in the Minnesota Lynx. New York will be on the road on Friday for an 8:00 p.m. start, before returning to ‘The Rock” for a 4:00 p.m. tip off.
