Mets Preview 8/18/11-Pelfrey looks to keep self and Mets on track

It was this time last week that Mike Pelfrey (6-9, 4.58 ERA) made comments that were misunderstood, during a time that his team was in a rough stretch. Pelf came out on his start Saturday against the Diamondbacks looking for redemption, and to prove that he wanted to be a part of the team.

After giving up two runs in the bottom of the first, the righty settled down to toss four shutdown innings. Pelfrey displayed some of the best ‘stuff’ on the hill that day against what is a very tough D-backs squad.

That was before a comebacker hit by Gerardo Parra snapped any hopes of redemption, as the ball hit Pelfrey in his right-elbow, causing the starter to leave the game with a contusion. It was reported on the SNY network that x-rays on the injury were negative.

After having a spot-relief start on Tuesday, Pelfrey will look to keep not only himself but his team on track. The Mets (60-63) were able to pick up their first victory at PETCO Park on Wednesday, and will look to keep the positive momentum at Citi Field.

It will be a rough test though, as they take on a red-hot Milwaukee Brewers (72-51) who won 19-of-21 games entering play on Wednesday. The Brewers went 5-1 on their last road trip in Houston, while also taking two-of-three from the Cardinals.

New York though regained their swagger both at the dish and on the field, as several defensive gems along with seven runs and seven hits gave the Mets their first series victory at PETCO. David Wright led the New York offense with his three-run homer (10) in the top of the third inning.

Wright thus far has been able to record double-digit homers in the eight MLB seasons that he has played, while also making a tremendous defensive plays. Angel Pagan and Willie Harris finished with a combined four hits and four RBI’s to also lead the Mets offense.

In what will probably be the biggest story in most newspapers in New York is the return of former Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez, as it’ll be the first time K-Rod has pitched at Citi Field since being traded to the Brewers on July 12.

Milwaukee will send out starter Shaun Marcum (10-3, 3.50 ERA) in a 7:10 p.m. start at Citi Field on Friday.
