Unlucky seventh inning for Mets in 4-3 loss to Bombers

It was an unlucky seventh inning for the New York Mets (39-33) in the 4-3 loss to the New York Yankees (42-28) in MLB action on Saturday night. The win for the Bombers was their fourth against the Mets this season, while guaranteeing the guys from the Bronx the crown of Kings of New York.

“It can be a bloop and a blast with them,” said Mets manager Terry Collins on the Yankees line-up. “They can get to you in any inning. There is not one guy that can’t hit the ball out of the park and you can’t make mistakes against them.”

The Yankees have won five consecutive Subway Series against the Mets, as the Blue and Orange had a seven-game Interleague stretch snapped in the loss. In front of 42,122 fans, which was the largest in Citi Field history, the Amazin’s were unable to regain the lead that they had in the early innings.

Leading the charge offensively for the Mets was Kirk Nieuwenhuis who helped the Kids from Queens get an early 1-0 lead on a homer (7) to left field. Josh Thole and starter Chris Young drove in runs in the fourth and the sixth innings before the Yankees made their comeback.

It all started for the Bombers in the top of the seventh, as Young began the frame by walking Mark Teixeira. Nick Swisher laced a double (20) to right field for his 1,000 career hit, set the stage for Raul Ibanez who continues to get clutch hits for the Yankees.

“It is just who he has been throughout his whole career,” said Yankees’ skipper Joe Girardi on Ibanez. “He is not a guy who focuses on what he did previously, he is just the guy who gives you a solid at-bat every game.”

Ibanez tied the game in that frame with a three-run homer to right field to tie the Subway Series up at three, that was when Collins made the call to the pen for Jon Rauch. Rauch had a Hard Day’s Night on the hill as the righty gave up a pinch-hit homer to Eric Chavez (5) which gave the Yankees the lead for good.

“I am trying to get a lead,” said Girardi on why he decided to use Chavez. “When you get a lead you can use your bullpen differently and I was just trying to get a lead. We had a little momentum at that point and I knew (Tim) Byrdak wasn’t going to be in yet, so I knew he was going to have an at-bat against the right hander.”

Rauch lost his seventh consecutive decision tonight, which ties a career-long losing streak. As for Chavez the veteran infielder was able to record his first career pinch-hit homer.

“I thought he threw the ball okay,” said Collins of Rauch’s performance. “That ball down the left field line went out of the ballpark-I don’t even think you can classify that as a mistake.”

In bad news for Mets fans Ike Davis was out from the game with food poisoning, it was also revealed that Frank Francisco was also injured. As for the Bombers, catcher Russell Martin left the game with a sore back.

The Subway Series finale is going to be a treat for all baseball fans as Mets starter R.A. Dickey (11-1, 2.00 ERA) takes on Yankees-ace C.C. Sabathia (9-3, 3.55 ERA). Each starter has tossed a complete-game with 10 or more strikeouts on June 18. The Finale will air on the ESPN network, with first pitch slated for 8:05 p.m.
