With an atmoshpere and a crowd that was filled with enthuiasm and excitment for the start of the 2025 MLS Season, the New York Red Bulls embarked on Sports Illustrated Stadium in the best way possible, with a 2-0 victory.
As the crowd walked around the newly named Stadium, featuing new amentities and features including some of the great covers the Magazine has throughout the years in the cooridors there was much anticipation as to how the 2025 edition of the Red Bulls would fare against Nashville.
Those that were in attendance were treated to a ton of cool new features moments before the game, including the Running of the Bulls Ceremony that is going to feature celebrities making appearances before the match, and an incredible light display and hype video prior to the match.
Then with those within the arena putting the eyes on the pitch the guys kicked off against Nashville to see how the two teams would fare, and things started on the best note possible.
Within the first moments of the game the guys had themselves a wonderful chance as newest addition Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting tried for the first goal at the 7′ which hit the post. Thankfully things were in favor of the home side as nearby was Mohammed Sofo and he quickly cashed in on the rebounded opportunity.
For Sofo getting the call to the first team, after putting in the time and effort with the New York Red Bulls secondary squad the moment was a memorable one. Mohammed making his first start, made an immediate impact by being a part of the team gaining an early lead.
From there it was all the New York Red Bulls as throughout the first half they played very well in terms of being able to have possession of the ball, passing to each other and creating opportunities for themselves.
Choupo-Moting seems to be acclimating well with his new squad as he made himself noticed throgout the night, with some great scoring opportunities throughout.
Many feel it is just a matter of time before Choupo finds his scoring touch with the team, but already his impact and ability to set up his teammates is a positive one for the squad.

Coach Sandro Schwarz shares these thoughts:
When it comes time for Forsberg that moment was a special one, as during the match against Cincinnati there were moments when it seemed as if he was going to find the back of the cage. To be able to now have the first goal under his belt is something that is going to be vital for the team going forward, as his energy and enthusiam as well as scoring ability is something the team looks forward to in the matches.
As the half went along the guys continued to see stellar opportunities, and went into the half with a 2-0 lead.
From there it was all about how the guys were going to hold on to that lead and gain the first points at home.
Nashville did gain a bit of momentum in the second half as Alex Muyl got the ball rolling in their favor.
The Red Bulls combined defense and then regained momentum as opportunities from Alexander Hack, Julian Hall and Noah Eile all came at about the 80′.
With great oppotuntiies coming from both sides of the field, it was the Red Bulls coming through with a huge 2-0 victory and opening Sports Illustrated Stadium in the best way possible.
There were also a ton of other memorable moments for those in attendance as well, as during the game the team celebrated the fact that they won the 2024 Eastern Conference Championship by adding the 2024 Trophy logo to Trophy Row, and then at halftime had a ceremony for retiring goalkeeper Ryan Meara.
Meara having himself an incredible career with the franchise, playing 12 seasons in the goalkeepr position, which is the most by a single player in franchise history.
Ryan a graduate of Fordham University, where he is enshrined in the Hall of Fame, and was a huge part of the soccer program for the Rams. While at Fordham Ryan won the 2011 Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year and won the 2012 Vincent T. Lombardi Award as Fordham’s Top Athlete.
Some of the other accolades for Meara with the Red Bulls included the fact that during the 2024 appearance he was a part of 20 shutouts, which ranks fourth place in franchise history.
Overall, the experience was a memorable one for many in attendance, and was one that Coach Schwarz was hoping he and the team could create during the team’s media day held earlier in the year.
Now with momentum and positive energy on their side the guys go back to the training pitch to prepare and refocus themselves for a test against Atlanta in the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. That match is to be played on 3/8/25 with the start of the action set at 7:30 p.m.
