The Mets Sign Soto, two RHP over 2024 Winter Meetings

With the 2024 Winter Meetings now closed, the Mets have made some major moves and signings. Bolstering pitching and batting specifically, and in even more exciting news the much-rumored Juan Soto deal notably came to a close in Queens.

Juan Soto signed a 15-year, $765 million contract with the Mets last week, completing a physical and putting ink on paper after a much-anticipated contract search from the star outfielder. The contract includes a full no-trade clause, $75 million signing bonus, opt-out clause after 5 years, and numerous perks including a suite at Citi Field and allowances for Soto’s family.

The deal is the highest in major league history, topping Shohei Ohtani’s $700 million deal with the Dodgers last year. The contract is an impressive investment for the Mets, who rest on the assumption that Soto will continue his Hall of Fame trajectory for the next 15 seasons.

The Mets also signed RHP Frankie Montas on a two-year, $34 million deal. Fresh from a recovery season with Reds and the Brewers. Montas is going bolster the Mets pitching rotation with his over-95 mph fastball and nasty splitter that carries a 42% whiff rate.

In addition, the Mets picked up righty closer Clay Holmes, making the transition from the Bronx to Queens, as he now has a 3-year contract. They did not disclose the value, but the deal is estimated to be worth about 38 million. Holmes was the Yanks’ go-to closer for the past three years, carrying a sub-1.4 WHIP and two All -Star selections in the Bronx.

Overall, the Mets are clearly filling gaps in their pitching staff, in addition to the record-breaking signature from Soto in the outfield. However, with 55 days left until pitchers and catchers reporting, time is still left for the Mets to put the league’s biggest payroll to more use.
