The New York Mets announced that they have acquired OF Jose Siri from the Tampa Bay Rays, in exchange for RHP Eric Orze.
Siri comes off an impressive defensive season in the outfield, solidifying his name as one of the most valuable players in that position. He tied for second place among all outfielders in runs prevented and outs above average in 2024, according to MLB Statcast.
Offensively, though, he struggled to put the bat on the ball with a .187 average for the 2024 season. His 2021 rookie year in Houston saw him put up a .304/.347/.956 slash line, so it’s clear the Mets see the potential in Siri at the plate. Additionally, he ranked ninth in MLB for sprint speed in 2024, giving him an offensive advantage once he gets on base.
Siri hails from Sabana Grande de Boya, Dominican Republic, and was signed by the Cincinnati Reds in 2012 as an international free agent. After paying his dues in the minors, Siri was picked up by the Houston Astros in 2020 and made his major league debut in 2021 against the San Diego Padres.
The Mets sent Eric Orze to the Tampa Bay Rays in this deal, who made his major league debut this past year. The Mets drafted him in 2020 out of the University of New Orleans, and he threw just 1.2 innings in the majors this season. He was called up after posting a 2.92 ERA over 62 innings in Syracuse.
